UPDATE - I ordered a CSF all metal 3 row brass unit from Rockauto. still spendy but $100 less than OE and will get here Thursday.

What would you do?

OE at $500 but here tomorrow and a guaranteed fit

KOYORAD at $250 here Friday hoping it arrives intact and fit.

History - I bought a KOYORAD and it arrived damaged. So I bought another brand from a local radiator shop that didn’t fit. So they ordered another one, that one burnt down fell over then sank into the swamp also didn’t fit (looked to be the exact same radiator in a different box).

I have one hour to decide before I miss my OE shipping window.

The time factor is a big deal but not as big as it used to be...I mean I just can’t let it stretch out into another week. I need it by this weekend and it needs to work.

thoughts?

I guess I could order 2 KOYO and ship one back.

if this car’s a keeper I’d suck it up and get the OE. 3 out of 3 misses with aftermarket is more than enough.

and starred for the Holy Grail reference.

Local rad shop can’t fix the broken one I presume?

Its a thought. I don’t know if they do that anymore. They did big radiators for 20 years but may not do that. I’ll ask though.

usually the most you can do with a modern radiator is replace/re-gasket the side tanks. you can’t solder aluminum like you could the old brass ones.

This sounds like a lot of hassle for a radiator.. Able to just find one on rockauto or amazon that is known to fit? Id just get the OE one if I couldnt get one faster via those sources. The best part is always the one I can get NOW. Hate waiting for crap to ship when I finally have the time to do the repair.

Its funny, they told me the opposite. I just called and they said they can’t do tank to tube interface repairs but they can do core repairs. since my is leaking at both tanks...

The koyo is a promised fit, and I can order one from Amazon, but I don’t want to seal with another damaged in transit unit.

I’d go OEM at this point.

Normally I wouldn’t hesitate, but:

1. the leaky one IS a fairly new OE unit

2. $500

maybe things have changed. perhaps they can do precision welding.

Is it sold by amazon or just listed on there? And do you need the vehicle immediately or does it really not matter? Thats a significant savings and I trust stuff sold by amazon to get to me safely, or its at least properly insured anyways. But yeah its not a bad idea to order two and return one if its broken haha.

Any shops near you carry CSF (or can order it)? Your part # is 2517 and it’s all metal, no plastic end tanks. RockAuto has 1 in stock but their expedited shipping is pricey. Amazon is 3rd party seller, not prime. RockAuto also has Denso 2219362 which I assume is the OE part for well under $200 before shipping.

The damage was probably a fluke. You have a right to be pissed, but I wouldn’t boycott them over it. You can ask them to package the next one more carefully, or maybe choose another delivery service. If they promised a direct fit, they have to deliver on that, period. If they screw up a second time, then maybe it’s time to get a full refund and never buy their stuff again.

no one local pick and pull has decent cruiser parts here. Its fighting for scraps.

I think it may depend on the shop. The place near me won’t boil out a used radiator... but they can do repairs and can even custom TIG one for you if necessary.

Well the absolute need would solve that decision for you. If its not sold by amazon, delivery isnt guaranteed by Friday anyways. Have you checked rock auto? I have found their shipping to be very reliable and prices competitive. And do the box stores have anything worth considering?

Good points on both accounts. Hopefully the aftermarket one would fit correctly. I will say, your recent adventures continue to sway me away from an 80.

Which is the more common issue? OEM ones to leak, or aftermarket ones to not fit?

IMO the OEM rad is a waste since they seem to have a tendency to leak.

I’d chalk this up to bad luck more than anything else. My experiences with the 80 seem to indicate that things I touch break, things MR. T did, are all still working great.

(I knew that’s what you meant...)

I’d go OE but see if someone could get me a discount. My pal owns a shop and I can get his prices on most things.

I asked my discount people and one is out of town until the 15th and can’t do it, the other is out of state and getting it to me would come out to about the same.

All-metal three-row brass... Sounds good. I don’t like plastic radiators. How many miles/years did the first one last?
